ACADEMICS

Boys Prep Bronx Elementary School seeks to provide a strong foundation that ensures our boys are on a predictive path to college completion. We strive to prepare well-rounded and literate scholars and active, thoughtful, and empowered citizens. This overarching vision requires our students to develop character traits associated with ethics and excellence, experience the world around them, and learn skills such as collaboration, writing, and using technology. It requires that our students see past gender stereotypes for both boys and girls that limit choices and hinder their self-expectations and the expectations they have of others. Our core values of scholarship, merit, brotherhood, and responsibility are embodied in everything we do.

Curriculum

Boys Prep Bronx Elementary School follows a vertically aligned, interdisciplinary, knowledge-based curriculum aligned to the Common Core State Standards that provides differentiated access points for all learners. Prior to the opening of Boys Prep Bronx, the Public Prep Academic Team developed “lesson arcs,” which are five-to-seven day mini-units that include a complex text, guiding questions, and writing assessments and activities.

Our elementary school curriculum motivates students to make connections between their own lives and the important economic, social, and political forces that shape the world and empower them to influence those forces through individual and collective action.

Curricular-aligned field trips take advantage of the rich arts and cultural experiences in New York City and students travel to other cities to see sites important to American history and visit college campuses.

Our 2014-2015 academic goals are focused on

1) curriculum development and implementation,

2) writing, and

3) complex problem-solving.

Data and Assessment

Teachers and instructional leaders routinely collect and analyze a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative data in order to improve curriculum and instruction.

Students are assessed using curricular-aligned, performance-based assessments as measures of absolute performance. These rigorous assessments require synthesis and a high-level application of knowledge from all subject areas. Student growth is measured using the NWEA MAP and Fountas and Pinnell assessments. Throughout the year, students take interim assessments aligned with our scope and sequence in mathematics and in English Language Arts.

Professional Development

Teachers at Boys Prep have two distinct roles: one as learner, and another as facilitator of student learning. All instructional staff members participate in a network-wide community of learners that grows through trust, openness, and risk-taking.

Professional development is focused on helping teachers develop a deep understanding of the curriculum and learn how to design and deliver instruction that facilitates student understanding.

Staff members engage in regular professional development at both the school and network-wide level. They are supported through time, resources, collegial conversation, and meaningful feedback on practice.

Technology Integration

Teachers incorporate technology into the heart of the curriculum. Students use technology to harvest information, collaborate with one another, communicate ideas, and develop the continually evolving skill-set required to thrive in the 21st century.
