Public Prep

These colleges and universities represent where the inaugural cohort of graduates from Girls Prep received offers from and will be attending.

The Story

In 2005, when Girls Prep Lower East Side was founded as the first and only all-girls public charter school in NYC, it was created with the simple idea that every parent — regardless of race, income level or zip code — should have the power to choose a great public school for their child. And if you wanted a high-quality, single-sex education, you should have that choice too.

From 90 scholars in Kindergarten and 1st grade in 2005, Girls Prep has now grown to educate nearly 2,000 scholars across Girls Prep Lower East Side, Girls Prep Bronx and Boys Prep Bronx. These schools are all supported by Public Prep, now the nation's oldest and only non-profit network that exclusively develops exceptional PrePrep and single-sex elementary and middle public charter schools. Driven by our North Star of College Completion, we are determined to graduate 8th grade scholars who thrive in “right-fit,” high-performing public, private, or parochial high schools, and ultimately earn a degree from a four-year college or university.

The Result

Twelve years after the founding of Girls Prep, the long-term results are in. The 2016-17 school year marked a very special milestone in the history of Girls Prep, as it was the first year in which both Girls Prep Lower East Side and Girls Prep Bronx Middle Schools graduated 8th grade scholars, and the year that the first cohort of 47 Girls Prep scholars that graduated 8th grade in 2013 will be entering college and pursuing their postsecondary plans.

On June 28th, 2017, nearly 1,500 family members, friends, past and current faculty, alumnae, and scholars attended Public Prep's first-ever unified ceremony on a college campus. We formally graduated those 8th grade scholars, listened to the funny and insightful speeches from our exceptional 8th grade valedictorians Josephine and Esmeralda, the engaging remarks by the Howard University-bound alumna Azana, the inspiring words from commencement speaker Cecilia Rouse, Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, and honored the inaugural Girls Prep cohort that graduated from 8th grade in 2013.

Indeed, four years after the inaugural Girls Prep cohort of 47 scholars that graduated 8th grade in 2013, ninety percent received on average nearly five offers each from top colleges and universities and cumulatively received more than $5 million in scholarship offers. These scholars were accepted into and will be attending some of the finest colleges and universities in the country including those above.
